It’s that time of year when people yearn for spring. People are inspired to step outdoors on a more regular basis, enjoy the warmer weather, and perhaps watch the colorful kites take to air during the 15th Annual Kite Flying Festival “Basant Mela”. This exciting event is presented by the Pakistan Information and Cultural Organization, and it is a celebration to celebrate the arrival of spring. Kite flying is a cultural tradition that is common in India and Pakistan.
One of Arizona’s largest kite festivals is one of a kind of event, and sponsored by the town of Fountain Hills. Families are encouraged to bring their own kites, or purchase one for a nominal cost of $5.00. Last year many of the kites flown were large custom made kites, and Fountain Park provided the right wind conditions for an amazing kite flying experience. In addition, there will be live music, various ethnic foods, henna tattoos, and the star of the festival “hundreds of flying kites.”
Last year, approximately 2000 people attended the festival, and this year another 2000 people are expected. This year’s festival is on March 11th, and will begin at 11:00 am, and go on throughout the day until 6:00 pm.
