November Activities in Fountain Hills

november-pic-1hello-novemberThe Cup of Festivities “Runneth Over” in November!

Some celebrations are reflective, like our observance of Veteran’s Day at Fountain Park, while other events, like the Thanksgiving Day Parade, offer opportunities to share happy traditions with friends and family. But most of all, the beautiful Fall weather in Arizona beckons us outside to enjoy Sonoran Lifestyle at its finest.

World-class Tennis, Internationally ranked endurance Cycling races, The Fall Festival of the Arts, the Turkey trot, and the Southwest’s largest Thanksgiving Day parade…just a few of the hundreds of multi-generational happenings in the lush Desert Foothills we call home.

NOVEMBER 18, 19, 20, 2016:  Orme Dam Victory Days

nov-17-ft-mcdowell-reservationEach November, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in Arizona celebrates their 1981 victory over the federal government, who proposed to construct the Orme Dam at the confluence of the Verde and Salt Rivers. The project would have flooded the reservation and relocated the Yavapai people. With limited financial resources, individuals from the community spearheaded an opposition movement that rallied the support of fellow tribal members, other Indian tribes and non-Indian groups.

By referendum in 1976, the community members voted 144 to 57 against selling their land to the federal government for the dam site. Then on November 12, 1981, after consulting with the Fort McDowell Tribal Council and the Governor’s Advisory Committee, Interior Secretary James Watt announced that Orme Dam would not be built.

The annual victory celebration includes:

  • Intertribal Powwow
  • All-Indian Rodeo
  • Basketball, softball, and golf tournaments
  • Yavapai Village, showcasing cultural performances from different tribes of the Southwest
  • Arts and crafts vendors
  • Authentic native food vendors

Halloween in the Hills

26-oct-spooky-haunter-houseHalloween in the Hills has become one of the largest celebrations of its kind in Arizona! On Monday, October 31st 2015, from 4pm-8pm, The Town of Fountain Hills will shut down the entire Avenue of the Fountains.  More than 40 local businesses and charities will be providing family game booths along the avenue. Plus businesses stay open for trick or treating! Booths are carnival style, and kids can win candy and toys.  Originator of this great celebration, Sami Fine Jewelry, will sponsor the “Pets and their People” costume contest, a “not to be missed” celebration of hilarious and creative costuming.

But the best spot on the Avenue is Sonoran Lifestyle Real Estate’s “Spider Village.”  There are treats for both kids and adults, and a creepy haunted house-type experience that gets better every year.  Venture into the Spider’s lair to enjoy a fun-filled haunted experience for young and old alike.  The Spider Experience starts at 5:30pm.

4-8 p.m., East End of the Avenue of the Fountains

Flourish Restaurant Now Open at CopperWynd Resort & Club

Take Chef Mike Winneker of Cowboy Ciao in Scottsdale, add the management panache of the Enchantment Group via Sedona, and Copperwynd’s new restaurant, Flourish is the stunning result.

Flourish, overlooking Fountain Hills and the majestic Four Peaks mountain range, is branding itself as a sustainably sourced, luxury eatery.  Flourish will be led by General Manager Charlie Floyd, known for San Diego’s Noble Experiment and New York City’s Milk & Honey.

“With world-class amenities and the most scenic views in town, Flourish will always be a dining destination,” said Floyd. “What makes Flourish unique is that, much like our menu skillfully blends healthy and more decadent offerings, Flourish is as much fun for a casual happy hour as a romantic dinner.”
