NOVEMBER 18, 19, 20, 2016:  Orme Dam Victory Days

nov-17-ft-mcdowell-reservationEach November, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in Arizona celebrates their 1981 victory over the federal government, who proposed to construct the Orme Dam at the confluence of the Verde and Salt Rivers. The project would have flooded the reservation and relocated the Yavapai people. With limited financial resources, individuals from the community spearheaded an opposition movement that rallied the support of fellow tribal members, other Indian tribes and non-Indian groups.

By referendum in 1976, the community members voted 144 to 57 against selling their land to the federal government for the dam site. Then on November 12, 1981, after consulting with the Fort McDowell Tribal Council and the Governor’s Advisory Committee, Interior Secretary James Watt announced that Orme Dam would not be built.

The annual victory celebration includes:

  • Intertribal Powwow
  • All-Indian Rodeo
  • Basketball, softball, and golf tournaments
  • Yavapai Village, showcasing cultural performances from different tribes of the Southwest
  • Arts and crafts vendors
  • Authentic native food vendors

Halloween in the Hills

26-oct-spooky-haunter-houseHalloween in the Hills has become one of the largest celebrations of its kind in Arizona! On Monday, October 31st 2015, from 4pm-8pm, The Town of Fountain Hills will shut down the entire Avenue of the Fountains.  More than 40 local businesses and charities will be providing family game booths along the avenue. Plus businesses stay open for trick or treating! Booths are carnival style, and kids can win candy and toys.  Originator of this great celebration, Sami Fine Jewelry, will sponsor the “Pets and their People” costume contest, a “not to be missed” celebration of hilarious and creative costuming.

But the best spot on the Avenue is Sonoran Lifestyle Real Estate’s “Spider Village.”  There are treats for both kids and adults, and a creepy haunted house-type experience that gets better every year.  Venture into the Spider’s lair to enjoy a fun-filled haunted experience for young and old alike.  The Spider Experience starts at 5:30pm.

August Activities Move Inside Where It’s Cool!

#1 4 peaks morning 008

“How glorious a greeting the Sun gives the Mountains. – John Muir.

August in Arizona is known for its chaotic weather, including our famous dust-laden “Haboob” storms that roll across the Valley. But every morning and evening of the monsoon Fountain Hills is blessed with indescribably spectacular skies.

When we are fortunate enough to have an afternoon shower, our evenings cool down a bit, and Fall seems closer than three months away. Fountain Hills kids start school August 8, so we’ll want to be sure to watch them, just in case they forget they are sharing the road with us!

And please remember to patronize our area businesses in August—shopping local helps keep the variety and convenience of our unique retail and dining options prosperous and successful. Your friends at Sonoran Lifestyle Real Estate invite you to check in to our Blog each month for information on many interesting activities going on in and around the Fountain Hills area.

Annual River of Time Spaghetti Dinner & Spectacular Auction – Tickets Available!

#12 Mini FountainHow about winning Free Pizza for a year from Little Caesars? Or a week in Mexico at one of the luxurious Vidanta Resorts? (The Mayan Palace in Rocky Point is one of their properties, as it the gigantic Grand Mayan in Cancun). Summerland Tour 2016 at Fort McDowell Casino

Named one of the Ten best summer Package Tours by Rolling Stone!

#13 -summerland-tour-The 2016 edition features Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit and Sponge.

Sugar Ray was one of the quintessential rock bands of the 90’s. Musical styles – from dancehall to disco, punk to pure pop – are mixed and matched, resulting in a celebratory, swaggering collection that is distinctively and delightfully Sugar Ray.

Everclear is heavier, darker and more aggressive than ever. And frontman Art Alexakis has never been happier. As familiar as the sound of a jet engine and as visceral as a ride on a speeding motorcycle.

Lit, best known for their hit song “My Own Worst Enemy”, is prepared to both re-excite their longtime fans and win over new ones. Lit incorporates elements of punk, pop, grunge, heavy metal, and alternative.

Sponge is one of the Motor City’s heaviest hitters, gaining international notoriety with their debut album “Rotting Piñata”. With hits like “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles),” Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and MTV. Tickets Starting at $35 | Buy Tickets >

Doors Open 6PM, Show Starts 7PM | This Is an Outdoor Event.
