The Fountain Hills Veterans Memorial is a permanent installation at Fountain Park honoring America's Heroes

The Fountain Hills Veterans Memorial is a permanent installation at Fountain Park honoring America’s Heroes

Annual Memorial Day Celebration in Fountain Park

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the US Military.  Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official holiday in 1971.  Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

VFW Post 7507 is honored to present the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Fountain Hills on Monday May 30th at 9AM.

Easter Season is Egg-actly Perfect In Fountain Hills

Painted EggsEaster-time weather in Arizona is about as close to perfect as we come throughout the year.  Breakfast or dinner on our patios becomes the norm, and all manner of outdoor living—walking and hiking, golf, tennis, pickle ball, and maybe the very best of all, sun rise and sunsets are at their glorious best.

Two of Fountain Hills longest-standing traditions, (the free and often comical “Eggstravaganza” and the non-denominational Easter Sunrise Service in Fountain Park), are just a few of the ways we celebrate Easter with our friends and family.

Eggstravaganza!

EggstravaganzaRated in the top three Easter Egg events in the greater Phoenix area, the Fountain Hills Eggstravaganza is a delight, whether you have kids or grandkids participating or not!

More than15,000 plastic eggs stuffed with goodies are spread out over two baseball fields in Golden Eagle Park.  The scramble for eggs is divided by age group, with toddlers/3 yr. olds in one field, and the older kids in the other. Kids must be 7 yrs. and younger to participate, must be accompanied by an adult, and must bring his or her own basket.

The actual chase for the eggs is slated for 9-10 a.m., but if you are bringing children to participate, you need to be parked and on the field by 8:45—the race for the eggs is fast and furious, and it is all over in about 10 minutes!  The Fountain Hills Fire Department will have trucks on hand for the kids to explore, and Noon Kiwanis will be serving breakfast.  Yummmmm.

Easter Sunrise Service In Fountain Park

Don’t miss the breath-taking event on Easter Morning.  The annual non-denominational Easter Sunrise Service is held in Fountain Park.  This celebration draws from across the Valley, so bring a chair and a blanket, as it will be a bit nippy.

Sunday, March 27, 2016, 6:00 a.m. (but come early so you don’t miss a thing:  Sunrise will be about 6:20)

Fountain Park Performance Pavilion, corner of Saguaro Blvd and Palisades

Easter Brunches Are Sumptuous in Fountain Hills

EAster Sunday PicsFor many families and their friends, Easter Brunch is a treasured tradition.  In Fountain Hills, we have a number of elegant brunch venues, each with its own flair, and all providing a wonderful backdrop for treasured family photo opportunities.

CopperWynd Resort Hosts “Jazz In the Hills”

Armand Boatman Trio at CopperWynd Resort, Friday, February 1, 2013

A variety of jazz styles and artists visit Jazz in the Hills

A variety of jazz styles and artists visit Jazz in the Hills

Fountain Hills is blessed with an enterprising group of Jazz enthusiasts, known as “Jazz In the Hills” whose mission is to promote the art of improvisational jazz music.  You can enjoy that music each week at local hot spots, including CopperWynd Resort and SunRidge Canyon Golf Club.

Jazz in the Hills is committed to preserving and sustaining the improvisational art form of jazz. To preserve the music, they present weekly concerts featuring musicians who have mastered the art of improvisation. They sustain the art form through education in schools and during concerts. Stories behind the music make it memorable and meaningful.

This week’s concert features trumpeter, Fred Forney with the Armand Boatman Trio. The concert is presented at $10.00 per person for general admission; $9.00 per person for members. Come and enjoy the wonderful music and incomparable views from the summit overlooking Fountain Hills at CopperWynd Resort

Alchemy Restaurant at Copperwynd offers the best Jazz Patio in the Valley!

Alchemy Restaurant at Copperwynd offers the best Jazz Patio in the Valley!

Want a real treat?  Call CopperWynd’s Alchemy Restaurant to reserve a table for  the dinner service, one of the Valley’s best locations where the spectacular 50-mile view is every bit as stunning as the culinary choices.

Come early between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. for special drink and food prices. Drinks, starters and small plates and meals from the full dinner menu are also available before and during the concert. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Seating is limited. Tickets are available now at www.jazzinthehills.org

Jazz is a musical art form originating in the USA around 100 years ago. Jazz is unique from other music because it is based on the practice of improvisation; spontaneously creating melodies based on the underlying harmonic structures of the tune. Many of the popular musical forms of today are based on the rhythmic and harmonic structures of jazz.

The majority of the musicians who perform at Jazz in the Hills concerts are teachers at the College level. In their day job they teach students how to play the instruments in solo and ensemble settings and to understand the history and theory of jazz music. They promote the mastery of the techniques, patterns and music theory that create the sounds of jazz. Most importantly, these musicians can and do perform this improvisational musical style professionally where and when they have the opportunity. Performances are as essential to learning music as hearing a spoken language is essential to learning the language. Reading about art or language or music does little to give it meaning. It is essential to provide an outlet for live performance of the art.

Jazz in the Hills provides a unique outlet for performance of traditional jazz. While pop music venues are common, the number of Jazz venues is rapidly diminishing. Our mission to preserve jazz means teaching and demonstrating the skills required for improvised jazz music. Our mission to sustain jazz means bringing this music in the form of workshops to younger students (K-12) who would be unlikely to ever be exposed to the music.

Through these two interwoven methods of public performance and teaching we will create an environment where the original musical art form can be presented and heard, taught and learned, preserved and sustained.

The Great Grape Stomp Returns to Fountain Hills

Fountain Hills Great Grape Stomp

The Grape Stomp Returns to Fountain Hills, Nov 3

Donna McGee will perform at the Great Grape Stomp

Donna McGee will be providing listenable vocals throughout the event.  A veteran of the café scene in Tucson, she brings her easy but elegant style to the Valley.  Vendors will have all manner of snacks and meals, starting with a variety of healthy breakfast items from Eat me Catering. Desserts, from whoopie pies to fudge and popcorn will abound.

A wide variety of juried artists will be selling original art and wearable art pieces throughout the show, and an award ceremony at center stage on the Avenue of the Fountains will announce the winners of the 5K race.
