November Activities in Fountain Hills

november-pic-1hello-novemberThe Cup of Festivities “Runneth Over” in November!

Some celebrations are reflective, like our observance of Veteran’s Day at Fountain Park, while other events, like the Thanksgiving Day Parade, offer opportunities to share happy traditions with friends and family. But most of all, the beautiful Fall weather in Arizona beckons us outside to enjoy Sonoran Lifestyle at its finest.

World-class Tennis, Internationally ranked endurance Cycling races, The Fall Festival of the Arts, the Turkey trot, and the Southwest’s largest Thanksgiving Day parade…just a few of the hundreds of multi-generational happenings in the lush Desert Foothills we call home.

This nationally-ranked professional event is taking place literally in our “back yard,” and it affords a rare opportunity to watch the professional elite in action.

With approximately 90 tournaments hosted annually throughout the country and prize money ranging $10,000 to $100,000, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pro Circuit is the pathway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players and a frequent battleground for established professionals. This is only one of two USTA events held in Arizona, and the circuit has an international following.

pc-player-montage-women-ticketThe USTA launched its Pro Circuit 33 years ago to provide players the opportunity to gain professional ranking points, and it has since grown to become the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world, offering nearly $3 million in prize money. Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Caroline Wozniacki, James Blake, Li Na, Andy Murray and Mardy Fish are among top stars who began their careers on the USTA Pro Circuit.

The field for the CopperWynd Women’s $50,000 Pro Challenge will feature 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Tournaments at the $50,000 level typically feature players ranked from #100 to #500 in the world. They are stepping-stones to WTA Tour events and Grand Slam tournaments like the Australian and US Open.

NOVEMBER 18, 19, 20, 2016:  Orme Dam Victory Days

nov-17-ft-mcdowell-reservationEach November, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in Arizona celebrates their 1981 victory over the federal government, who proposed to construct the Orme Dam at the confluence of the Verde and Salt Rivers. The project would have flooded the reservation and relocated the Yavapai people. With limited financial resources, individuals from the community spearheaded an opposition movement that rallied the support of fellow tribal members, other Indian tribes and non-Indian groups.

By referendum in 1976, the community members voted 144 to 57 against selling their land to the federal government for the dam site. Then on November 12, 1981, after consulting with the Fort McDowell Tribal Council and the Governor’s Advisory Committee, Interior Secretary James Watt announced that Orme Dam would not be built.

The annual victory celebration includes:

  • Intertribal Powwow
  • All-Indian Rodeo
  • Basketball, softball, and golf tournaments
  • Yavapai Village, showcasing cultural performances from different tribes of the Southwest
  • Arts and crafts vendors
  • Authentic native food vendors

August Activities Move Inside Where It’s Cool!

#1 4 peaks morning 008

“How glorious a greeting the Sun gives the Mountains. – John Muir.

August in Arizona is known for its chaotic weather, including our famous dust-laden “Haboob” storms that roll across the Valley. But every morning and evening of the monsoon Fountain Hills is blessed with indescribably spectacular skies.

When we are fortunate enough to have an afternoon shower, our evenings cool down a bit, and Fall seems closer than three months away. Fountain Hills kids start school August 8, so we’ll want to be sure to watch them, just in case they forget they are sharing the road with us!

And please remember to patronize our area businesses in August—shopping local helps keep the variety and convenience of our unique retail and dining options prosperous and successful. Your friends at Sonoran Lifestyle Real Estate invite you to check in to our Blog each month for information on many interesting activities going on in and around the Fountain Hills area.

Summerland Tour 2016 at Fort McDowell Casino

Named one of the Ten best summer Package Tours by Rolling Stone!

#13 -summerland-tour-The 2016 edition features Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit and Sponge.

Sugar Ray was one of the quintessential rock bands of the 90’s. Musical styles – from dancehall to disco, punk to pure pop – are mixed and matched, resulting in a celebratory, swaggering collection that is distinctively and delightfully Sugar Ray.

Everclear is heavier, darker and more aggressive than ever. And frontman Art Alexakis has never been happier. As familiar as the sound of a jet engine and as visceral as a ride on a speeding motorcycle.

Lit, best known for their hit song “My Own Worst Enemy”, is prepared to both re-excite their longtime fans and win over new ones. Lit incorporates elements of punk, pop, grunge, heavy metal, and alternative.

Sponge is one of the Motor City’s heaviest hitters, gaining international notoriety with their debut album “Rotting Piñata”. With hits like “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles),” Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and MTV. Tickets Starting at $35 | Buy Tickets >

Doors Open 6PM, Show Starts 7PM | This Is an Outdoor Event.

July Heralds the Return of the Monsoon —
Life-giving Rain Clouds Thunder Over the Mountains in Spectacular Array

July #1 Monsoon Sky FHMonsoon Storm watching is almost addictive in the Sonoran Desert Summer. The clouds gather every afternoon…sometimes a welcome veil of misty sun-cover, but most often pile upon pile of towering clouds climb up and over the mountains, bringing the hope of life-giving rain to the welcoming desert.

As the air cools the rain-scented air, we gather on our patios to wonder at the breathtaking color and form playing out across the gathering dusk. And if we’re lucky, the lightning and thunder will produce much-needed rain. At times like these, we can’t help thinking, “If you’re lucky enough to live in Fountain Hills, you’re lucky enough!”

Play It Again Sam

April #2play-it-again-samWoody Allen’s career as a playwright and later actor/director accelerated with the success of his 1968 play, “Play it again Sam.” Fountain Hills Mainstage Theater’s April offering is a “Hilarious… a cheerful romp. Not only are Mr. Allen’s jokes and their follow ups, asides and twists audaciously brilliant, but he has a great sense of character.” – The New York Times

Nominated for 4 Tony awards, the play follows newly divorced playwright Allan Felix who has this thing about Humphrey Bogart. If only he had some of Bogart’s technique… Bookish and insecure with women, Allan’s hero, Bogey comes to the rescue, with a fantastic bevy of beauties played out in hilarious fantasy

sequences. Fixed up by friends with gorgeous women, he’s so awkward that even the mythical Bogey’s patience is tried.

Play It Again, Sam

Play-It-again-Sam-300x275Allan Felix, who has just been dumped by his wife, is desperate to connect with another woman and dreams of a really BIG romance. Problem is, as he struggles to find an ideal partner in love, his neuroses, awkwardness, and insecurity with the opposite sex keep getting in the way. A movie buff and professional film critic, Allan has this thing about Humphrey Bogart, embodiment of machismo, epitome of cool … so he tries to tap into some of Bogart’s technique. As Allan muddles through real-life set-ups and let-downs, failed dates and panic attacks, Bogey indeed comes to his rescue – lurking in the shadows offering helpful pointers, zingers, words of wisdom, and … hope.

Written by Woody Allen and produced through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Yet Edwina has many talents including leadership, singing and advising, and she combines all of them by directing musicals out of her garage.

The topic of these musicals is letters written to her by neighborhood kids who need advice. One of the main themes of Dear Edwina is Edwina’s desire to be in the “Advice-a-palooza” festival because she feels it will prove that she is as talented as her siblings. This is all going on while Edwina’s love interest, Scott, is trying to win her over. But, since Edwina is so concerned about her show, she doesn’t pay attention to Scott. Scott manages to win her over — with a song and dance, of course.

Fountain Hills Community Theater Presents the Musical, “Quilters”

quilters_3-300x168QUILTERS blends a series of interrelated scenes into a rich mosaic which captures the sweep and beauty, the terror and joy, the harsh challenge and abiding rewards of frontier life. Illuminating stories contained in various patches or “blocks” with music, dance and drama, the action depicts the lot of women on the frontier: girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinsterhood, twisters, fire, illness and death. But, with this, there is also love, warmth, rich and lively humor and the moving spectacle of simple human dignity and steadfastness in the face of adversity. In the end, when the various patches are assembled into one glorious, brilliantly colorful quilt, the effect is both breathtaking and magical—and a theatrical masterstroke which will linger in the mind and memory long after the house lights have dimmed.
