Cyclovia comes to Fountain Hills!

The international fitness and family fun festival known as Cyclovia (Pronounced like “See ‘Ya At Cyclovia!) is coming to Fountain Hills.  Now a world-wide phenomenon, Cyclovia started in Bogata, Columbia in the 1970’s, and spread throughout Latin America, before spreading to Australia, Europe,Asia,  and more than 75 cities in the US.

Cyclovia comes to Fountain Hills April 13th!

This tradition stated at a small town square in Bogata.  Now, each Sunday and on holidays from 7 am until 2 pm certain main streets of Bogata are blocked off to cars for the exclusive use of runners, skaters, and bicyclists. At the same time, stages are set up in city parks. Aerobics instructors and musicians lead people through various performances. Bogata’s  weekly ciclovías are used by approximately 2 million people (30% of citizens) on over 120 km of car-free  streets. (Ask.com.)  In Arizona, the City of Tucson held its first Cyclovia in 2010, and the festival has grown exponentially each year.

The Town of Fountain Hills and the Fountain Hills Visitor’s Bureau have organized first Cyclovia in the Phoenix area, scheduled for April 13, 2013.  Cyclovia Fountain Hills is excited to join in this tradition, opening a selection of our downtown streets for biking, walking, talking, jogging, skating, and much, much more! Enjoy free health education sessions, yoga, pilates, jazzercise,  and bicycle safety courses and explore the beautiful scenery of Fountain Hills and our surrounding walking and hiking paths.

Art on the Avenue & Farmer’s Market kicks off Thursday, October 18 in Fountain Hills

Fountain Hills Farmer’s Market and Art on the Avenue are back this week, and the Avenue of the Fountains is the place for all the fun!  The event takes place each Thursday,  and runs 11-5.

Get ready to enjoy a wide array of homemade breads, cookies, pastas and fresh sauces, pesto and hummus.  You’ll also find all manner of gourmet salts, seasonings, sauces, and fresh greens, lettuce, fruits, veggies and citrus in season. Wild-caught salmon, free-range eggs, buffalo and natural cheeses are popular.  Whoopie Pies, fudge, sugar-jam cookies, and jerky are guilty pleasures but oh, so good!

Local artist Judi Yates manages the Art on the Avenue.   Throughout late summer, she’s been busy with new artist applications and plans for an even better experience for attendees. “We have attracted a larger group of artists from across the Valley with new and different products, including some very cool items for the home.  Our long-time artists tell me they have been busy with new products for the fall as well.”

“Many of the new Farmer’s Market vendors are from Fountain Hills, and this is their first market season.  It’s great to be able to provide a new way for Fountain Hills residents to start a new home-based business.  We are so grateful that shopping local has become a priority to so many residents who come downtown on Thursdays.”

Breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees are available featuring everything from breakfast sandwiches to tamales, chicken wraps, lasagna, meatballs, burgers, soups and frozen entrees for later.

The Farmer’s Market runs from October to April, and is a great way to get a jump on holiday shopping.

Fresh Produce rules the day at Fountain Hills Farmer's Market

Thursday, March 8, 2012:  It’s “Senior’s are Special Day” at the The Fountain Hills Farmer’s Market, with many artists and vendors offering special gifts, promotions and tastes for the more mature visitors.  And, with each market purchase, all visitors can register to win “The Best of the Best” cookbook from Food and Wine magazine.

Each week, the market continues to grow with additions of gourmet vendors from some of the area’s popular markets. One of the most exciting new Chicago-area transplants is “Eat Me! Gourmet Catering”, with a wide variety of gourmet frozen take-home meals and an ever-changing hot sandwich menu.  CK Kitchen, another recent entry, offers healthy wraps and sandwiches featuring grilled chicken, fresh hummus, tabbouli, and fresh pita bread.  Two vendors feature Greek food and take-out.  At one booth, stop and pick up fresh Greek cookies and coffee to enjoy while you stroll.  Many vendors ship and giftwrap, but all are happy to wrap up their specialty in a package suitable for hostess gifts, thank-yous and “just-thinking-of-yous.”
