16th Annual Disc Golf Champion Tournament at Fountain Park

Disc golf player

Fountain Park is home to hundreds of walkers, joggers, duck-feeders and bird-watchers, but it is also one of the most popular sites for professional and amateur Disc golfers. The week-long Professional Disc Golf Championship will span the first week of March, bringing fans and supporters from all over the US and Canada.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the “hole”. The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole Hole® an elevated metal basket.

As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed.

The Professional Disc Golf Association is an international training and tournament organization which organizes competitions all over the world.  The Fountain Hills tournament will draw thousands of fans from across the Valley, and it is free and entertaining for spectators.

Fountain Hills Docent Artwalks to Start Up Soon!

bigbirdFountain Hills is home to one of the largest collections of Public Art in the Southwest.  Topping 120 pieces this summer, with the addition of “Infinity” and “Big Bird,” the collection has just added a new piece to ‘President’s Row’ at the west end of Fountain Park.  President Ronald Regan has now joined Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln in sculptural tribute.

The Public Art Committee of the Fountain Hills Cultural and Civic Association and the Town of Fountain Hills manage the collection cooperatively.

One percent of construction permit fees are dedicated to the Public Art Fund, but many of the pieces, like “Infinity” are donated by individuals as special remembrances of loved ones.

To take special advantage of this stunning outdoor display, the Town is hosts docent-led art walks each month from October through April.  Volunteer docents provide information on the walks about each piece they visit, the techniques used to create the piece and a background on each artist that created the piece.

3 pieces artMany new pieces have been added to the collection over the summer, and the tour schedule has been revamped. The first tour, called the Civic Center Tour, begins at 9 a.m. This tour will feature pieces in the courtyard area and inside both the Community Center and the Library. The second tour, called the Fountain Park Tour, begins at 11 a.m.  This tour features pieces inside Town Hall, down the Avenue of the Fountains, and the collection at Fountain Park. Both tours meet at the Community Center.

Tours are offered at no charge, but participants can donate $5 and receive a commemorative Art Walk mug.  Pre-registration is required as the number that can be taken on the art walks is limited.  Registrations are accepted at Town Hall, Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., or at the Community Center, Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Basant is a seasonal festival celebrated at the end of winter to welcome spring. “Kite flying” is the major and most colorful event of this festival. Kites are of different shapes and sizes and are tied with specially made thread called “Doore.”Henna tattoos of all types and styles will be available as well, or if you are not looking for a “walk on the wild side,” authentic middle-eastern jewelry vendors will present an array of sparking treasures.

“Yellow” is the color of the festival and is visible everywhere i.e. from kites to clothes. Basant is not only a kite flying event, it’s a cultural festival for the entire family.
